CHAPTER NINE
The workweek dragged by. The only bright spot was Esther’s call inviting Christa over for dinner on Saturday.
“The only woman I feel like seeing is my mother,” she told Billie. “My life is truly over.”
Billie laughed. “That’s pretty bleak, kid, but I think you’ve still got a few more good years left in you.”
“Thanks a lot.”
Christa arrived early for the home-cooked meal. Although Esther was an excellent chef, she rarely cooked anymore. She’d stopped entertaining after Christa’s father died, and she always said that fixing a full meal for just two people was too much work.
Tonight, though, she’d gone all out. The aroma from the chicken made Christa’s mouth water. Esther had also gone to the trouble to prepare her two favorite side dishes, mashed potatoes and green beans.
Christa helped her arrange the food on plates. She poured a glass of wine for her mother and a glass of milk for herself. As she was carrying the food to the kitchen island, the doorbell rang.
Christa frowned. She knew Esther did not encourage friends to drop by without calling first. Even if there were a problem at the office, Esther’s secretary wouldn’t stop by; he would call her on her cell phone.
Esther, however, did not seem a bit perturbed. “I’ll get it,” she said. “You finish getting the table ready.”
A minute later, her mother returned to the kitchen.
Keri was with her.
Christa’s mouth went dry. She set the china plates down on the table before they could escape her limp fingers and shatter on the floor. Forgetting that Keri was a guest, she blurted out the first words that came into her mind. “What are you doing here?”
“Christa, mind your manners,” Esther reproved her daughter. “She’s here because I invited her.”
“Why?”
Keri turned back towards the door. “This was a really bad idea,” she said.
“The worst,” Christa agreed.
Esther stopped Keri with a hand on her shoulder and froze Christa with an icy glare. “That’s enough. I’m sick and tired of both of you acting like children. Tonight, we are going to have a civil conversation.”
She handed Keri the glass of wine that Christa had poured. “Here. You’ll probably want this. She turned to Christa, “And much as I hate to say it, there’s a beer in the refrigerator. But only one. I won’t have you get falling down drunk. Now, come into the living room and sit down.”
“The food will get cold,” Christa said, getting the beer out of the refrigerator.
“That’s why they invented the microwave,” Esther snapped. “Now move.”
She walked into the living room, and Christa had no choice but to follow.
Esther sat down in the easy chair. The only place left for Christa to sit was on the couch by Keri. “Mom, I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but—”
“Now that I’ve finally got you both in the same room, I want to know what happened between the two of you, and I want the truth. What on earth could make two people who loved each other the way you did separate?”
Staring straight ahead, Keri sipped her wine.
